This is the place where the joint "Australian-New Zealand Army Corps" (ANZAC) during WW I on its march from Gaza to Be'er Sheva in spring 1917 discovered a magnificent late antique mosaic from the era of the Byzantine emporer Justinian (dated A.D. 561). The "Shellal mosaic" - as it became known among archeologists - then was removed from its place in the church ruins and brought to Australia as war booty where it is on permanent display in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra––and of course on the internet:
