Komsomol peak (also known as Zhirensakal Peak or simply Karkaraly) rises 1403 metres above sea level in the southern part of the Karkaraly mountain range. It was given the name of Komsomol peak in 1936, after 100 Komsomol members climbed up to its top and planted the red flag on it. Before that incident other names were common: locals used to call the peak Zhirensakal ("red beard" from Kazakh) and newly-arrived Cossacks even named it Kabaniy Shish ("wild bore's tip"). One may ascend Komsomol peak from two sides: starting in the valley of the Kurozek river, through which a road from Karkaralinsk to Nurken village runs (i.e. from the north-west) or starting in Komissarovka tract (i.e. from the east). The second option is easier.
