The Cumberland monument was raised at Norderney on 6 June 2002. It is a copy of the original monument 1866, which was lost in 1938 at an attempt the relocate it.
The monument is shaped as an obelisk, and has the name of a member of the royal House of Hanover on it: Ernst August, crown prince of Hanover, George V, king of Hanover, his father, Marie, queen of Hanover, his mother, Ernst August I, king of Hanover, his grandfather.
In 1836 crown prince George, the later king George V of Hanover (who also was Duke of Cumberland), visited the island of Norderney for the first time. He enjoyed the see breeze and made Norderney his summer residence.
At 10 August 1861 beach watcher (Badewärter) Gerrelt Janssen saved the 16-year old crown prince Ernst August, the eldest son of George V, from drowning and saved the House of Cumberland and the monarchy since Ernst August was the only son. This act was the actual reason for the erection of the monument.
