The construction of the assembly building, aesthetically one of the most elegant monuments, was initiated by Dewan Bahadur Bhoj Sing, the first speaker of the Sindh Legislative Assembly, in 1938. It was completed within a span of about two years at a cost of Rs1 million, and was inaugurated by Sir Hugh Dow, then governor of Sindh, on March 4, 1942. The first session of the Sindh Legislative Assembly was held in this building on April 2, 1942.

Two most important episodes of Pakistan’s history are attached with this building: first, resolution for the creation of a separate Muslim state of ‘Pakistan’ was moved by G. M. Sayed and passed by the Sindh Legislative Assembly on March 3, 1943 and, second, Lord Mountbatten, last governor-general of India, transferred powers to Father of the Nation Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah on Aug 14, 1947, who on the next day took the oath as first GG of the new country. For these reasons the Sindh Assembly Building was declared in 1993 as a ‘national heritage’ of Pakistan.
