Chand Bibi Bridge was called 'Kala Pul' for a long time, ironically it has always been white in color.

'Kala Pul' is still the more known and commonly used name for this bridge.

  • To Brawny - You have it all wrong. 'Kala Pul' is the former name which was changed to Chand Bibi Bridge some years back. Please understand this: The new name for 'Kala Pul' is 'Chand Bibi Bridge'
  • Kala Pul was never Kala in color, then why was it called kala pul for so long? Now has this pul been taken to the chand?
  • Kala Pul is made of iron. To rust proof it, they painted its lower side black. When a person passed under it in a train, s/he could see the black color bridge. When this bridge was seen - coming from up country, it was only a matter of minutes for the train to reach Karachi Cantt Station. So everybody would say کالا پُل آگیا ہے (Kala Pul has come - meaning, "Get ready to get off the train") The upper portion was however painted white or very light gray color. People traveling in cars - on the bridge - could not understand why it was called Kala Pul, but the name stuck causing this irony - Kala Pul is White.
  • Kala Pul is renowned internationally as it bridges the most affluent part of Karachi i.e DHA with rest of the city. People across the 'bridge' and 'other side of the bridge' are used by disgusting DHA residents to distinguish themselves from common Karachiites. I guess a short independent film also bears the name kala pul and depicts the same class difference.
