The Cité (walled city) is a good example of 17th century Vauban forts. Louis XIV commisioned this after the origional city was burned. There are several more forts in the area. Fort des Salettes, Fort de Têtes, Fort de Randuillet, l'Enfernet and two others to the Southeast. Most of them are abandonned and are easy to access if you don't mind hiking up a mountain.
