In 1918, three police officers and a U.S. Marshal traveled to the Power cabin to arrest Tom Jr. and John for dodging the draft. Opinions differ as to the details of the incident, but a gunfight broke out, killing all three officers and the boys' father. Tom Jr. and John survived the gunfight but were both put in prison.
