founded by a famous son of the little arab town: the Roman Emperor Phillipus Arabs (244 - 249), completely renewed the town in 244 AD as the only completely roman foundation of a town in Syria without influence of native tribes. Typical Roman plan with Cardo and Decumanus crossing rectangularly in the middle with Tetrapylon. Had up to 40 000 inhabitants and remained an important town later as the seat of a christian bishop.
