Reikanji temple (Kyoto)

A Rinzai sect temple. Founded in 1654 by Emperor Go-Mizunoo (後水尾天皇) and his daughter, princess Johosshin'innomiya Shucho, who was also the first nun and Mother Superior of the temple which was a "monzeki", i.e. a special temple-cum-nunnery for the members of the Imperial family ruled by the Emperor's close relatives - ladies of the highest rank.
In 1687 the temple was moved to its current location, after two rooms were donated to it by Emperor Go-Sai (後西天皇); these rooms, as, later, the whole interior of teh temple, were apinted by artists of the Kanō school (狩野派).
Up to 1890 the temple served for the Imperial family.

This temple is particularly known for its kamelia garden and beautiful momiji watching.
