USS Liberty Attack by Israel

Egypt / Samal Sina / El Arish /
 battlefield, notable event

This is the approx location of the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty on 8 June, 1967. Thirty four American sailors were killed, and 171 wounded. The ship had noticed it was being observed by IAF aircraft.
The ship was first attacked by IAF planes with machine guns and rockets. A second attack strafed and dropped napalm. These attacks were followed by Motor Torpedo Boats firing torpedoes, one of which struck just forward of the bridge on the Starboard side. Crewmembers reported that the MTBs fired at the life rafts that had been launched.
The fact that this ship was saved from sinking after a 40 foot hole was blown open, is a testament to the bravery of the men and training that they had received.
