I had my confirmation in the Martin Luther church in 1964. At that time the bells were still being chimed by hand, meaning that a person pulled on a rope that was attached to the bell. Upon entry, one was able to see that person in the alcove of the entrance right behind the minister, who in those days, welcomed all who came for service. This slowed the entry of the congregation, allowing us a peek past the minister to see if we knew the person on bell duty that Sunday. No big deal by today’s standards, but it was always a fun fact to share with your friends who the bell ringer was.
