The Gwangju Biennale (a festival or exhibition held every second year), founded in September 1995, is Asia's first and most prestigious contemporary art biennale founded in memory of the Gwangju Democratization Movement. Gwangju Biennale presents a global perspective on contemporary art.

Gwangju Biennale, an international modern art festival, held biennially, was introduced to celebrate the fifty restorations of independence and the year of art in 1995. Its purpose is to sublimate the spirit of May 18 Democratic Movement into a new culture and promote Korean art culture and the tradition of Gwangju art culture. Gwangju Biennale has tried to take its role as the central axis of culture production as a part of globalization in the global age that respects the spirit of the nation based on the tradition of art.

The Gwangju Design Biennial is held alternately with the Gwangju Biennale. The event was founded in 2005 with the purpose of understanding international trends in design, promoting design industries in the 21st century, and contributing to developing the design in the world.
The Gwangju Design Biennale showcases a variety of everyday items and works, combining creativity and artistic approaches.
