 hill, historic landmark

This site witnessed a tragedy of WW II: the crew of a German recce-aircraft was hit on its way back from Cairo to the German lines and went down in this area. The crew obviously parachuted, gathered and tried to reach the German lines in the west but failed, probably because lack of water. Their final rest was in the shade of this rocky mountain where they died. The three bodies were covered with sand. In 1999 the mortal remains and personal belongings were recovered and transferred to the German Cemetary of Al Alamain. One member of the crew was identified due to a personal identification number that was scratched into the rock and was preserved over the decades.
The limestone rock is 135 m above sea level.
