To secure a better defence against hostile bedouins, the wall of the monastery had no gate on ground level (like St Catherine's in Sinai). So all goods and visitors had to use an elevator that lifted everything and - one up into the gate tower. This elevator still can be regarded but is not used any longer as a gate was broken into the wall.
