Earlswood Lakes were built in the 1820s to provide water for the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal, at a cost of £297,000, and took five years to construct with labour reputedly from Napoleonic prisoners of war. The lakes are now used mainly for angling and boating. The lakes consist of three reservoirs now called Engine Pool (for fishing), Windmill Pool (for boating and some fishing) and Terry's Pool (a nature reserve).
The last "water bailiff" of Earlswood Lakes was Bill Dolphin from 1958-1974, who lived in a Victorian boathouse which was destroyed by fire in 1978, although remnants of it can be seen at the western end of Engine Pool.
