This is the approximate start line for the Charge of Beersheba - 31 October 1917. After a whole days battle to take Beersheba, slowly reducing its outer defences and running critically low on water, it was decided to charge the turkish defenders to try to take the town before nightfall. The Australian 4th and12 Light Horse charged across over 3 kilometers of open terrain against Turkish troops in trenches with machine guns and artillery support. The horseman rode over the trenches causing panic in the turkish defenders, before dismounting and fighting hand to hand. The charge successfully captured Beersheba and its surprise managed to secure the vital wells that it held. Capturing Beersheba unhinged the Turkish defence line running between it and Gaza and result directly in the capture of Jerusalem by Allied forces under Allenby 6 weeks later.
