The mound of the Tankeevka settlement of the Volga Bulgars, located just southeast of the modern village and some 20 km south of the capital Bolghar. This archaeological site has yielded remains from the 9th through 14th centuries, including coins minted by the Golden Horde. The settlement mound is part of a larger archaeological complex including over 800 burial mounds in its vicinity (Tankeevskij mogil'nik), which have been studied since 1904. At present over 1200 burials have been identified and explored, and it is estimated that the total number of burials is around 5000. The settlement mound and burials contained remains of everyday objects, weapons, and jewelry. The material remains confirm the appearance of a new population in the area, date primarily from the 9th and 10th centuries, and reflect the population's transition from pagan to Muslim religions practice.
