On December 17, 1944, eleven soldiers from the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion (an African-American unit of the U.S. Army), who had been captured by the Germans, were executed by the SS at this spot. This memorial is believed to be the only one in Europe honoring African-American soldiers from World War II.
