Suseongdang is a shrine dedicated to the spirit Gaeyang Grandmother and her eight sisters who rule the West Sea. The shrine is said to have been constructed in 1801, the current building rebuilt in 1996.

Gaeyang Grandmother is a sea god who safeguards the West Sea protecting seamen by warning them of dangers in the ocean. She also is said to control the wind and waves to help fishermen have good catches.

Seamen in the region worship her with all their hearts. On the first day of the Lunar New Year a memorial service is held to pray for a big catch and for peace in the Village. Each of the fishing villages offer a sacrifice to Gaeyang Grandmother in January.

Suseongdang is North Jeolla Province Tangible Cultural Property #58.
