Former slave plantation (independence in 1974) About 1,200 people live at Porto Alegre and it’s eight dependent worker satellites. It was a productive Cocoa plantation. Prior to being a slave plantation it was a agricultural research site for the Portuguese. Pineapple, bananas and various other useful plants were developed for export and trade.
