The town and fortress were established on the San Teodoro hill (which shares its name with the local church) by the Lombards during the course of Lombardo-Byzantine competition for control of the area. The single community of Laino was divided into Laino Castello and Laino Borgo (just to the north) in 1811. In 1960 a new Laino Castello was established for hydrogeologic reasons to the southeast. Old Laino Castello was completely abandoned after a violent earthquake in 1982.
