Founded by Ganzan Daishi in 938 as an "okurodo" (a private temple directly controlled by the Imperial family). Known as a place of the grave of Murasaki Shikibu (author of Genji Monogatari); also, there is a number of graves of the Imperial family.
One can also see remains of the earthern rampart built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the late 16th century for protection of the capital.
