Sir Thomas White (1492 - 1567) , English cloth merchant, founder of St. John's College, Oxford, and one time Mayor of London (elected 1553), was a benefactor to Coventry.
The statue was made by W. W. Willis & T. W. Willis, sculptors, London, in 1883.
On a separate plinth in front of the statue is a glass box containing an open Bible.
