ruins, archaeological site, fortress, iron age, ancient ruins
A large Iron-Age fortress is located at Kerkenes (or Kerkenes Dağ). The site was probably inhabited by the Hittites and Phrygians, and, being located east of Halys, would have become part of the Median Empire by 585 BC. Kerkenes might be identical with ancient Pteria, identified by Herodotos as the location of a battle between the Lydians under Croesus and the Persians under Cyrus the Great in late 540s BC. The Persian victory was followed by Cyrus' conquest of Lydia. The hilltop citadel of the ancient city later served as the site of a medieval Byzantine fortress.
