On 17 January 2012, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria, Prof. Cheryl de la Rey, officially opened the Plant Sciences Complex. It houses diverse departments and institutes in the plant sciences in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

The new R100 million complex strengthens inter- and cross-disciplinary research collaboration, between plant diversity, ecology, biotechnology and medicinal plant science, the new Forestry Research programme, the SAFCOL Forestry Chair, and the growing activities of the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI).

The complex provides under- and postgraduate laboratories, a microscopy and a biotechnology laboratory, a double tier auditorium and two smaller meeting rooms, as well as a herbarium and a green-house on the top floor.
