Sviblovo District (Moscow)

Russia / Moskovskaja Oblast / Mytishchi / Moscow
 district, invisible, third-level administrative division

Administrative district (raion) of North-Eastern Administrative Okrug, and one of the 125 raions of Moscow, Russia. The area of the district is 4.41 square kilometers (1.70 sq mi).
The name "Sviblovo" dates back to 17th century; a local boyar, Fedor Andreevich, was nicknamed "Svibl", referring to his speech impediment ('svibliy' was an old adjective that meant 'lisping'). In 18th and 19th centuries the area was popular with contemporary aristocracy. Sviblovo was visited by several important Russian historical figures, such as historian Nikolay Karamzin and composer Alexander Skryabin (and later, in the 20th century, writer Vasily Shukshin). In 1850s several factories were built here and the area started prospering financially, however by the end of the 19th century the financial situation was already not good, and after the events of 1917 Sviblovo plunged into rapid decline. Much of the district was rebuilt during the USSR years, most houses are post-1950. The old Sviblovo estate still exists and is now undergoing extensive restoration.
