The van der Graaf Accelerator was constructed in 1963 for the Department of Physics. The facility consists of a proton accelerator and a sub-critical reactor module which is utilised for training and research in the field of nuclear physics. Since its inauguration in 1964, the University and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) have cooperated closely in this field and more recently the University has broadened its international research connections in this regard.
