Named after its two largest unincorporated communities (Markstay and Warren), the town was created on January 1, 1999 by amalgamating the political Township of Ratter and Dunnet (in the east) with the Township of Hagar (in the center), the Geographic Township of Awrey (in the west), and parts of the Geographic Townships of Hawley (southwest), Henry (northeast), Loughrin (north-center) and Street (northwest).
