The Sacred Heart Mission was founded in 1858 and the church building was started soon after.
The present church, since enlarged, dates from no earlier than in 1860s. The present timber Presbytery, adjacent to the Cathedral, dates from no earlier than in 1860s and presumably there was accommodation for the priest at that time. The present presbytery appears to date from before 1900 and is said to have been two storied originally. The Sacred Heart Mission went on to found other missions, converts and schools on Ovalau and throughout the islands.
