Excavations carried out on several occasions have discovered a vast area covering about 25 acres , densely inhabited in the middle of the first century BC , as revealed by the presence of several floors signino , and used continuously until at least the fourth century AD A little further upstream , near the door of the Ortacci , the area now occupied by the eighteenth-century hospital , the church of San Francesco and Piazza Forty Martyrs returned a series of structures with the first phase of construction dates back to the years between the II and the first century BC, contemporary with the planning of the new district , which was connected to a thermal plant . Further north the area was occupied by a large domus built on at least two levels, with mosaic floors and signino . Below palace Wizard Wheezes and its immediate vicinity are some structures visible on the remains of a domus with peristyle and some basic pillars perhaps relevant to a colonnaded street plotted in the direction of the theater , which at this point has emerged suddenly paving . At the center of the Guastuglia stands the theater (first century BC), one of the most capacious auditorium of the time with a diameter of over 70 meters which could accommodate 6,000 spectators . To the southwest of the building for shows has resurfaced a stretch of the terrace wall in opus vittatum bounded at this point that the area of the Roman city. Between this sector and the church of San Biagio was identified a large ceramic discharge (open on request) material dated between the Archaic period and the end of the second century BC . In the archaeological section of the Municipal Museum , housed in the premises underlying the Palace of the Consuls, shows the events of the city and the territory from prehistory and the early Middle Ages in the upper hall are on display boards Iguvine , fundamental document of the Umbrian language and religious rituals , recorded between the end of the third and the beginning of the first century BC, consisting of seven bronze tablets discovered in 1444 near the Roman theater.
