Iran's first steel factory, initially opening in the early 1970's, and expanded considerably since. Built by the USSR in barter for Irani \natural gas. The semi-circular "steel city" to the northeast was a part of this project, and includes a number of Soviet-style multi-story apartment blocks.

Zob Ahan-e Esfahan and Iran's first car manufacturer, Iran National (renamed Iran Khodro after the 1979 Iranian revolution) were parts of a significant move from mainly agriculture-based economy toward industrialization by the pre-revolutionary government of Amir Abbas Hoveyda.

The company owns the football club of the same name, Zob Ahan F.C.
