No.11 Market Place (Chippenham)

In 1823 No 11 was purchased by Thomas Spencer, surgeon, for £1200 (which included a pew in St Andrew’s Church) and the property became a doctor’s surgery for the next 150 years. Dr Briscoe was the owner at the turn of the 20th century and he passed the surgery on to Dr Evans who sold it to the Borough Council when he moved away in 1957.

Originally No 11 as built by Samuel Fludyer extended southwards along Timber Street. This wing was demolished in 1967 to make way for the new library (not actually built until 1973). The property this left is as we see it today.

House, now municipal offices. Mid C18. Coursed limestone rubble, ashlar quoins, parapet and dressings, stone slate roof hipped to the left. 3-unit plan.
