Stubenberg Castle is an impressive facility, which was built on the foundations of a medieval castle grange from the 13th and transfomed into a castle in the 16th century. The castle bears the name of one of the oldest and most significant noble families of Styria, the Lords of Stubenberg, which though lost their influnce as they converted to protestantism in the 16th century. Their successors, the House of Drachsler, undertook the castles adaptations during the Renaissance, when its present arcaded courtyard was constructed in 1581.
From 1632 the castle belonged to the noble Herberstein family, in the 19th Century the castle was acquired by the Counts of Wurmbrand. Henriette Countess of Wurmbrand-Stuppach donated the estate to a convent of Franciscan nuns in 1926, which resided here until 1979. In 1980 the estate came into the private ownership of Frank and Margaritha Schleicher. Since 2001 a 4 star hotel is located in the renovated castle, which also houses a venue for events, concerts and exhibitions. The castle's tavern is run as a café, bar and bistro since March 2007.
