monument, tsunami
On its coast, the two kilometer-long shoreline of Takata-matsubara, home to 70,000 pine trees, was formerly a designated Place of Scenic Beauty. But after the tsunami, just one lone tree, 27 meters high and 200 years old, remained standing.
The tree finally died in May 2012 due to seawater damage. Then, the tree was cut down, and was restored as a monument. Its completion ceremony was held on July 3, 2013.
