Heemraadssingel (Rotterdam)

The Heemraadssingel is a singel (or small ornamental canal) of about 1.5 km in Rotterdam's historic Delfshaven on the border of the districts Middelland and the New West . Heemraadssingel begins at the junction with the Rochussenstraat , Coolhaven Metro Station and ends at the Zoo Tunnel near the old main entrance to Rotterdam Zoo .

The Heemraadssingel was built around 1900 , the canal was part of an expansion of the city designed by architect GJ de Jongh . At the intersection of Heemraadssingel and Mathenesserlaan is the former mayor's mansion built in 1906. While the area is highly historic and a very desireable and expensive place to live, none of the buildings on it are actually listed monuments, perhaps because most if not all date from the early 20th century. The park is open day and night and includes many facilities for recreation, including an extensive children's play yard, skateboard park and basketball courts (both closed at night). In the summer it is a popular place to picknik, and there is a community pop up cafe from May-September in the middle of its length known as Singeldingen.
