  • GUJARAT INSTITUTE OF DESERT ECOLOGY (GUIDE), BHUJ - A GLANCE Ecology with special reference to arid and semi-arid regions involving management aspects is an up-coming discipline in our country. Traditionally this subject formed a small part of the natural resource science. Studies on the arid ecology have been largely confined to Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI), AFRI, BSI (Regional Station) and ZSI (Regional Station) which are mainly working in the Rajasthan State. However nothing tangible was done in this field in the State of Gujarat. The Gujarat Department of Forest and Environment of GoG is carrying out above said activities through the State Forest Department (GSFD), however, their activities mainly are centered at plantations and protections. In order to organize research and education in ecology of arid and semi-arid regions in the Gujarat State on a strong scientific footing and to foster the development of this new science, the Gujarat Ecology Commission - a body set up by Gujarat Department Forest and Environment of Government of Gujarat signed a MOU with Jacob Blaustein Institute of Desert Research, Israel in September 1993 for setting up an institute for research, education and training on Arid and Semi-arid ecology and related issues. As a follow-up, Prof. Uriel Safriel, Head of the Mitrani Centre for Desert Ecology, Israel visited Kachchh district in May, 1994 and based on his recommendations, the Gujarat Department of Forest and Environment (Govt. of Gujarat) accorded administrative sanction to start an autonomous institute in January 1995. In pursuance of the above order, the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE) was established at Bhuj–Kachchh district is headquarters, in May 1995 and also was registered as a public trust and a society. The Mission of the GUIDE is; The Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE) will catalyse the process of ameliorating human misery in desert ecosystems, following sound ecological principles and carefully using scientific knowledge, imaginative technology and capital. Main Activities Since Inception (1995): Multi-disciplinary team of Scientists (7) with various expertise (vegetation, restoration ecology, wildlife, ethno-botany, coastal-marine ecology, ecosystem modeling, Remote Sensing & GIS, etc.) Supporting research staff – mostly post-graduates (nearly 17), many registered for Ph.D. at different Universities in the state. As part of the research studies conducted by the GUIDE, between May 1995 and May 2004, five doctorate degrees (Ph. D) were produced. Compatible and matching administrative and logistic staff. Chemical analysis laboratories (wet and dry) with state of art equipment. Well stocked library with many environmental periodicals and herbarium of Kachchh vegetation. The following Conference /Seminar and Workshops were conducted. International Conference on “Natural Resource Conservation, Use and Sustainability in Drylands” between 18th to 20th December 2006 Workshop on Biodiversity (National Level) Workshop on Grassland Development through People’s Participation (State Level) Workshop on Grassland Action Plan for Kachchh District (State & District Level) Workshop on Community Based Mangrove Regeneration along the Kachchh Coast (State & District Level) Round Table Conference – Natural Resource Conservation, Use and Sustainability of Drylands on 22nd November 2007. Workshop on Dryland Management Policy at New Delhi on 23rd November 2007 Workshop on Biodiversity Awareness in collaboration with National Biodiversity Authority and S D Agricultural University. Sh.
