In 1980, RAF Molesworth was chosen as a base for the USAF mobile nuclear armed Ground Launched Cruise Missiles or GLCMs. In the 1980s, the MoD completely rebuilt Molesworth. All runways, taxiways, and hardstands were demolished. In its place new infrastructure to accommodate nuclear missiles (storage, launchers, machinegun positions etc) was built.

In december 1986 the 303rd Tac Msl Wing was activated.
16 BGM-109G Gryphon Cruise Missiles were stationed till Dec. 1987, planed are 64.
However by the signing of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 1987 the missiles were obsolete which led to removal in october 1988. 303rd TMW deactivated in january 1989. The infrastructure from the 303rd TMW is still intact and being used by JAC.
