One of the trendiest shopping/eating/seeing-and-being-seen areas in Portland. East-West-running streets in this part of North Portland are named sequentially in alphabetical order (Burnside, Couch, Davis, Everett, Flanders, Glisan, Hoyt, Irving, Johnson, Kearney, Marshall, etc.) Have a fun time parking in this neighborhood.

  • I've lived near NW Glisan and NW 23rd for seventeen years and have never heard this area referred to as the "Alphabet District." This is just NW Portland to those of us under the age of 60. The original term for this neighborhood was Nob Hill, which is what you'll hear older folks call it. Hence the Nob Hill Pharmacy, Nob Hill Shoes, Nob Hill Dental, Nob Hill Bar and Grill, Nob Hill Apartments, and Nob Hill Travel. Maybe you'll hear a recent immigrant from California call it some stupid alphabet name, but it really this entry should be relabeled. At best "Alphabet District" is tourist speak.
  • Isn't this generally referred to as Trendy-3rd? I've never heard it called the "Alphabet district" either.
  • It says alphabet district on the street signs there, if you look. Trendythird is a better name though.
  • The streeet signs are clearly labeled "Alphabet District" under the street names.
  • Welcome to the neighborhood, Susan. Indeed it is the alphabet district because the first letter of the street names mimic the alphabet going north: Ankeny, Burnside, Couch, Davis, Everett, .... Savier, Thurman, Upshur, Vaughn, Wilson, (X?), Yeon, (Z?). I wish every district followed this simple, helpful pattern.
  • Maybe you should take up this debate with the Northwest District neighborhood association; http://www.portlandonline.com/oni
  • Hahaha , I am buying all your property and reinvesting it in California and making a ton of cash. California owns Oregon.
