monument, cross, catholic
A Catholic cross was erected here in front of cell Block 11 (barracks) after Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass in this area in 1979. It was later removed when a controversy ensued between Jews and Poles. This became a chapter in the "War of the Crosses" which resulted when a Carmelite Monastery for nuns was moved into a former concentration camp building and later were order to move elsewhere..
Cell Block 11 once held Maximilian Kolbe who was later killed at Auschwitz 2 (Auschwitz-Berkenau).
