This was the site of "Windemere", the mansion of Jerome Wheeler, built in 1882. It was demolished in the 1920s, following Wheeler's death in 1918.
Wheeler was a co-owner of Macy's department store and later an Aspen silver mining magnate, who also founded the Manitou Mineral Water Company and the Wheeler Bank, and financed the construction of the Colorado Midland Railroad.
He also had a house in Colorado Springs, at the northwest corner of Fontanero Street and Cascade Avenue, in addition to homes in Manhattan and Aspen.
