Sanctuary of St Catherine (Siena)

Italy / Toscana / Siena / Costa di San Antonio
 church, house, chapel

The birthplace of Catherine was converted into a sanctuary in 1465 and today it is a series of superimposed oratories. On the lower level is the studio where her father worked as a dyer; he had 25 children by his wife. It's easy to understand why Catherine, from the age of seven, decided to have no other husband but Christ. On the upper storey, in the oratory to the right, is a painted crucifix before which the Saint received the Stigmata in Pisa.
