Romanovka

China / Heilongjiang / Hailin /
 village, Old Believers

Old Believer peasants moved there from Primorsky Krai in the early 1930s. They gave their village the name of Romanovka in honour of the former imperial family and settled down in their new home, preserving the foundations of their faith and their hope for the chance of a peaceful and dignified life. Romanovka was founded in 1936 and rapidly developed into a prosperous village in the space of only three years.

The village's history ended in 1945. When Soviet troops arrived in Manchuria, almost all the heads of families were arrested and sent to the gulag. In 1950, Romanovka became part of the People's Republic of China. Some people followed their arrested fathers, husbands and brothers to the Soviet Union, while others ended up in South America, Australia and the U.S. By the mid-'50s, the village was abandoned.
