The Kurchatov Institute located at 1 Kurchatov Square was founded in 1943 (Russian Scientific Centre), previously known as I.V.Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy, is Russia's leading nuclear energy research and development institute.
Its secret name was "Laboratory No. 2 of the USSR Academy of Sciences" until 1955. The majority of Soviet nuclear reactors were designed in the Institute. Major activity of this institution is thermonuclear fusion and plasma physics. Later it was converted to State Scientific Center in November 1991 and came under the direct control of Russian Government. The Institute's president is appointed by the prime minister based on recommendations from Rosatom.
