The castle farm once stood next to a now destroyed castle on the south bank of the River Geul. The farm was originally situated in the middle of fields and meadows. Then, for some time, the building was surrounded by water, but these areas are being dried up and filled in.

Hartelstein is now used as accommodation, workplace and second-hand shop by the charity organization Emmaüs.
