The Liquid Effluent Retention Facility (LERF) is located in the central part of the Hanford Site. LERF is a federally permitted facility with three liquid storage basins designed to hold about 23,000,000 gallons of material.
LERF accepts and stores waste waters from a number of Hanford sources. Groundwater projects, 242-A Evaporator operations, solid waste disposal facilities, and other Site cleanup activities send their waste water to LERF through direct pipelines and tanker trucks. LERF waste water is routed to the Effluent Treatment Facility (see Effluent Treatment Facility) for treatment.
