Founded in 1477 by Mathijs de Waeyere and owes its name to the organizer Alvaro Almaras.
The current Almshouse was in 1838 rebuilt in neoclassical style and includes a courtyard with two wings being closed by a blank wall and arched gate in a stone frame.
In 1988 the Almshouse became protected architectural heritage.
