Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels (Los Angeles, California)

USA / California / Vernon / Los Angeles, California / West Temple Street, 555
cathedral, church, catholicism, Roman Catholic church

The Cathedral, build in 2002 to replace the smaller former Cathedral of Saint Vibiana (now a performing arts center) which was severely damaged in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. The building, designed by Spanish architect José Rafael Moneo of the firm of Moneo Brock Studio, can hold 3000 worshipers inside and the complex is home to the Cathedral Center (with the shop, restaurant, conference center, and cathedral parish offices), and the cathedral rectory, as well as the residence of Cardinal Roger Mahony.

Our Lady of the Angels is the 3rd largest cathedral in the world. José Rafael Maneo also designed the pipe organ for the cathedral. It is largest pipe organ west of the Mississippi. Donor wall can be seen in the 4th picture. Floating angels are etched into it's glass wall that is seen from the Hollywood Freeway. 150-foot-tall campanile can also be seen in the same photograph. A light-filled and modern mausoleum featuring 6,000 crypts sits in the cathedral’s basement.

  • Very Good Design, also this Cathedral is blessing ful of this place. Siju, Kerala, Pathanamthitta Dist. e-mail - sijuhappy@rediffmail.com
  • Known alternately as the Taj Mahoney or the the Rog Mahal. Really ugly on the outside, but oddly beautiful on the inside.
  • It's known in some circles as "Our Lady of the Yellow Armadillo" because of its exterior appearance.
