The Teiyo Maru was an Imperial Japanese Army Transport sunk at this location at 1730hrs on March 3rd, 1943 during the Battle of the Bismarck Sea. Near-missed by at least 11 bombs of various sizes, the unarmored ship was struck with four bombs and and two torpedoes before suffering a large onboard explosion and fire. 17 of her crew, 15 shipboard gunners and 1,882 troops aboard the ship at the time of her loss were killed in her sinking.
