The `Alala Heiau was probably constructed around 1400 - 1600 AD under the direction of the ali`i nui (king) of the island of O`ahu at the time named Kakuhiewa. The heiau was a place of worship but also likely served as a spotting site for directing fishing activities within Kailua Bay.
The heiau is on a private land parcel so general access is restricted. However, native Hawaiians possess certain constitutional rights under the Hawai`i constitution that protects their ability to access sites for traditional and customry practice.
The heiau can be easily seen from Kailua Beach and is identified by the large upright pohaku (stones) that sit behind the house built on the point around the rocks.
