Kardinia International College is an International Baccalaureate World College which offers high quality education for boys and girls from Australia and all parts of the world. The College provides a caring environment for both day and homestay students from Kindergarten to Year 12, preparing them to be leaders and productive participants in the 21st century.

The College began on 3 February 1996 with 31 Senior School students and 42 Kindergarten children. It celebrated its 10th Anniversary in 2006 with 1612 students. It has been a truly amazing story!

Kardinia means 'sunrise' or 'new beginning'. Although the College is new, it is built on the site where Morongo Girls College existed for nearly 70 years. It has a semi rural outlook and a host of excellent facilities. The founder of Kardinia International College, Mr Yoshimaro Katsumata, took advantage of the new beginning to

create an exciting College which utilises new practices and school structures to cater for the 'individual' student. The motto of Kardinia International College 'Wisdom leads to Respect and Friendship' is the energising source of all College activity.

The drive for high academic excellence not only serves to give students leading and productive places in the future, but also gives rise to a wisdom and an understanding that provide a foundation for an all pervasive ethos of respect and friendship. Every single activity within the College, whether it is a matter of discipline, a musical performance or a sporting endeavour, has respect and friendship as the foundation stones. Kardinia International College endeavours to be a symbol of hope for the world by being a place of quality learning and personal development where people from every corner of the earth feel welcome and at home. This is both the privilege and the challenge of Kardinia International College. Welcome to Kardinia!

John Goodfellow,
Principal

The Senior School offers students in Years 7-10 a vertical curriculum leading to either the Victorian Certificate of Education or the International Baccalaureate in Years 10 & 11. By the end of Year 10, students must satisfactorily complete a minimum number of units in each of the major curriculum areas. For example, eight units of English, six units of Science and so on. The vertical curriculum allows students to accelerate in areas in which they are strong, consolidate in areas where they are less able and to specialise in areas in which they have a particular interest.
In some instances students will complete their secondary education in five years while others will do so in the usual six or even seven years. All courses of study are semester based, so students select units for study twice each year. All units have the same time allocation - 200 minutes each week.

IB
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme was introduced to Kardinia International College in 2005 for students in Years 10 and 11. The introduction of the IB programme at the Diploma level provided a further means of articulating the commitment of the College to international understanding. From the outset the College recognised the fact that in a rapidly changing world, students need to have a broad education that will nurture and challenge them to become principled and reflective learners and listeners.
The IB Diploma requires students to choose from a range of subject areas thereby ensuring breadth of educational experience. The holistic vision of the IB is embedded in the compulsory components; the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Action and Service. Each of these provides students with the opportunity to develop crucial skills that will prepare them for university study, encourage them to critically evaluate the ways in which they learn and foster in them a sense of active and practical social responsibility. The IB is an excellent foundation for life long learning.

Kardinia International College offers students in Year 11 and 12 the option of completing either the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or the International Baccalaureate. The VCE is a two year programme in which students at Kardinia International College usually undertake 14 units in Year 11 and a further 10 units in Year 12. The mix of units can be drawn from all subject areas.Students in Year 10 have the opportunity to undertake one, and in some instances, two VCE subjects. About Kardinia International College
College Philosophy
From its beginnings, Kardinia International College has been built on four strategic cornerstones. These foundation cornerstones are the springboard for every activity and development at Kardinia.

The first cornerstone involves the ideal of providing a real and living motto “Wisdom leads to Respect and Friendship” as a strong proclamation showing the world that the human family can live in peace and harmony - it begins with our students. In an authentic learning environment, students develop wisdom that leads them to have absolute respect and friendship for all. This in turn will lead to an atmosphere of gentleness, dignity and the development of all the best characteristics of absolutely noble gentlemen and gentlewomen.

The second cornerstone involves the ideal of international understanding. The graduates of Kardinia will live in our global village where an understanding and deep respect of all other cultures and creeds will be an essential characteristic of leaders and productive citizens of the 21st Century. We educate our students to reach out and embrace other peoples, helpful

and creative ideas and the worthy traditions of other cultures.

The third cornerstone involves the ideal of the individual as a life-long learner where age is no longer related to curriculum. This ideal expresses itself in many dimensions – the celebration of the individual, the Colleges renowned vertical Curriculum, the multiplicity of activities and opportunities for individuals to celebrate their life. Kardinia International College regards each learner primarily as an individual with special abilities, skills, needs, interests and goals. Accordingly, our curriculum and learning environment at each level provides programmes designed to accommodate individual aspirations and to ensure that the goal of educating the whole person is achievable. The experience of our teachers, their specialist expertise and commitment to each student ensure outstanding results.

The final cornerstone involves the ideal of technological advancement wherein the students graduate with cutting-edge skills in information technology and communication. Kardinia graduates will be committed to the advancement of the human family through continuous improvement and advancement.

About Kardinia International College
College History
The word 'Kardinia' is a Tasmanian Aboriginal word which means 'sunrise' or 'new beginning'. The founders of Kardinia International College have taken advantage of the College's new beginning to create an exciting school which utilitizes new practices and school structures to cater for the individual student. Although the College is new, it is built on a site which already contains many excellent facilities and historic buildings. Morongo Girls College existed on the present site for nearly 70 years before it closed at the end of 1994. Morongo was sponsored by the Uniting Church and was renowned as a College of excellence.

Mr Yoshimaro Katsumata purchased the buildings, facilities and resources of the Morongo Girls College (in the middle of 1995) and established Kardinia International College as an incorporated entity with a Board of Directors in September 1995. The inaugural Principal, Mr John Goodfellow, was appointed at the end of September. Between October - December 1995, permission to open applications and registration documentation were prepared while students were enrolled and staff employed.

Kardinia International College began on 3 February 1996 with 31 Secondary students and 42 Kindergarten children. During 1996, an extensive programme of marketing and public relations was undertaken by an extremely enthusiastic and hard-working staff.

The College began in 1997 with approximately 450 students. Many additions were made to the College's operations.

They included: a second Kindergarten, the Early Learning Centre, the Upper Primary Centre, separate boys' and girls' Boarding Houses and the addition of Year 10 to the secondary programme.

In 1998 enrolments grew to 750 and these enrolments have continued to grow to the point where there is approximately1800 students enrolled in the College with a huge demand for further places.

Recent years have seen the following major developments:
Performing Arts Centre, Design Technology Centre, Junior School Administration building and Library, Science laboratories, Kindergarten and Preschool Complex, a 1600 seat Amphitheatre, multiple new classrooms and the Katsumata Centre.
The introduction of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme for the Kindergarten, Preschool and Junior School.
The introduction of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for Years 11 and 12.
The establishment of a campus in Chiang Mai in Thailand where over one hundred Year 9 students spend a term (eight weeks) on an extensive self discovery experience.
Parents, staff and students continue to write the history of what has already begun to be recognised as a truly great College.
